Disable the screensaver on your home computer.
Description
Disable the screen saver on your home computer and instead set the monitor and computer to hibernate/sleep automatically instead. Screen savers require the display and hard drive of a computer to continue working and consume energy. Sleep mode powers down the display and the hard drive into very low power consuming state.Assumptions We Made
Assumes LCD flat-panel display (most popular now) with 65 Watts at full power versus 3 Watts in sleep mode, sleeping 20 hours per day, being used 4 hours per day, every day of the year. Otherwise, would be left on all the time. Does not include additional savings earned when hard drive spins down and so on. Assumes that once you do this, it will stay in effect for 5 years, since most people replace their computer within 5 years.Impacts
